About the artist:
|
Rupert specialises in commissions for portraits. If this of interest please contact Steam Gallery.
He comes from a family where painting and art have been integral in his life. His father is the noted marine artist Robin Brooks. Rupert won an art scholarship to Blundells School and then studied painting and art history at the University of Wales, Aberystwyth. His real interest is painting people. In many of his works the figure is solitary and unaware of our presence. As Rupert says, “we can observe but are not perceived or acknowledged”. He often paints from an oblique viewpoint and crops his work which he believes takes the viewer on a journey through the work and encourages you to look at subjects in a fresh manner.
Rupert has exhibited regularly at the Royal Society of Portrait Painters, and has had work accepted for the Lynn Painter Stainer prize and the RWA in Bristol. He was also awarded the prize at the South West Academy open show in 2004 and in 2006 for the best work in the exhibition in the view of the selection committee.
In 2013 Rupert has been invited to become a Member of the South West Academy
Wonderful brush work and close observation brings Rupert’s subjects to life. Much influenced by Lucien Freud, he brings a stimulating intensity to portrait studies
