ART FROM VIETNAM
Vietnam artists have established a world wide presence in recent years. The work, often painted with fine lacquers on wood panels, fuses traditional Vietnam subjects with styling cues reflecting western influence.
Pham Phuong is one of this new breed of artists. His evocative paintings of people reflect traditional subjects and techniques but hint at influences and colours deployed by artists such as Modigliani, Klimt and Munch.
Phuong’s work is rich, warm and beautifully worked. Now, 37 years old and a graduate of Hanoi Fine Art University, he has become well established in Hanoi, the capital of Vietnam and has had a series of successful solo shows. His work has also attracted the attention of galleries in New York, Paris and Tokyo.
Steam Gallery and Marine House acquired these works following the gallery principals’ second visit to Vietnam. This is his first gallery showing in Britain.
All pictures framed in black wood. Sample shown.
