About the artist:
|
Martin Procter was born in Yorkshire in 1942, moving to Devon in 1956. For many years he was involved in architecture and award winning building projects, with a five year spell in St Lucia, West Indies.
His style and palette have made his work greatly prized. Trained in architecture, his love of structure and form is very evident in his depiction of Devonian coastal villages or moorland hamlets. His paintings frequently have a vertical segmentation to them, leading the eye in lines up the picture. They capture the essence of the subject, the texture of buildings and moorland influenced by that great artist and mentor, the late John Blockley RI.
More concerned with atmosphere and sense of place than with conventional representation, he translates sketches made on location to construct his striking compositions. A natural and instinctive artist, he uses a mixed media of watercolour, gesso, gouache, acrylics and collage on paper and canvas.
A selection of Martin's work is always on show at Marine House.
