Home-Bath
Ben Hughes is a self taught landscape and portrait artist (predominantly painting in Oils) based in Bath and began painting full time in 1999. He is entirely self taught which he feels has given him the freedom to explore and develop intuitively. He has exhibited widely across the South of England, including shows in Bath and the Cotswolds, and is a member of the Bath Society of Arts.
Marine House at Beer discovered Ben at the 2024 Open Show South West Academy of Fine art – and were so impressed we awarded him our prize as – “Best In Show”. The prize winning painting was ‘Farringdon Tube Station’.
He began as an en plein air painter but found the method to be too ‘hit and miss’, and was too shy to be standing in the street painting. He moved back towards visiting and sketching in addition to reference shots and creating his fine oil paintings in studio.
Success
His cityscapes are usually London or Bath. He has won numerous awards and his work is in many collections including those of the University of Oxford and the University of Cambridge. His prizes include the Davison Award and the Peter Kelly Memorial Prize from the Royal Society of British Artists and the Best Emerging Artist Prize and Viewers Choice Award from the Royal West of England Academy.
