Susie originally trained as an engineer and spent many years working in Africa developing technical solutions to promote financial inclusion and reduce poverty. Upon returning to the UK in 2019 she did a foundation diploma majoring in ceramics and was hooked! That led to a Ceramics HND at Morley College in London. In 2025 she returned to college to complete a BA (Hons) in ceramics.
She uses earthenware paper clay for her thin-walled hollow animals due to its strength, whiteness and lightness. They are glazed using a technique she developed to give an effect akin to pointillism, highlighted by a dark background. Their aim is to be joyful and remind the viewer that we live in a world of wonders and possibilities.
Her work is inspired by mythology and the natural world, influenced by her time in Africa. Her intention is to evoke childhood memories of optimism and limitless potential. The viewer is also invited to reflect that if we neglect our real or fantasy worlds, we risk losing their richness and diversity.
