Judy Hempstead SWAc 1939-2020

East Devon artist Judy Hempstead died suddenly and unexpectedly at the end of 2020. The art world has lost a talented artist whose range of compositions encompassed landscapes of the Jurassic Coast, mixed media abstracts and cleverly structured harbour scenes, examples of which are on display in Steam Gallery.

After qualifying in Fine Art at Newton Abbot College of Art, Judy obtained ATD Post Graduate Teaching Qualification from Goldsmiths, London. She then taught Art and went on to become a Lecturer at Exeter College. In 1998 she decided to dedicate her time to being a full-time artist. Judy’s work reflects her keen interest in mysticism and sense of history and drama to be found in the rugged South West coastline. Her fascination with the natural elements is reflected in her dramatic work. She was intrigued with the surface texture of the landscape and used mixed media, often collages, with watercolour and tissue paper, to recreate this.

Judy was an Honorary Member of the South West Academy and her work can be found in collections in the UK, Canada and on the Continent.
